I really need to get out and preserve some more wild garlic. I did ferment some last year in sealed vacuum bags but never actually got round to trying it, they have been sitting in my fridge ever since, I must try that.
My sister picked an entire rubbish bag full at the weekend to take back with her as it grows so rampantly here we have to mow it to keep the paths walkable...
I hopefully will be able to accomplish the homegrown pesto this year as we had a bumper hazelnut harvest last year and I still have three crates of nuts to crack. 😁 I just need more space in my freezer to keep it all 🤣
The fermented garlic is lovely, you should definitely taste it! I hope the patch of garlic in my garden gets to the "rampant" stage one day... Oh, and I have serious hazelnut envy 😆
Lovely post, Cat! Wild garlic is definitely a really easy plant to harvest, which makes it ideal for first time foragers! It's really healthy, too, as you well know. So glad you had a bountiful harvest this year!!
Several years ago we brought in some bulbs from the neighboring village, and 8 years later they are starting to take off, just a little bit. It seems that they prefer some soils over others. In Hungary, however, we were able to harvest kilos of leaves at a time, same as when we lived in Devon. Enjoy your bountiful harvest!!!
We have a patch of wild garlic which we started from 3 small plants and it's really getting established now, so we keep moving it so it will spread around the woodland. You can't have enough of it! We lived in Switzerland a few years and bärlauch season was a big thing, with special restaurant menus featuring it in every dish 😋 bärlauch pesto was very popular too. We often make a mixed herb salt but haven't tried the wild garlic version, so will give that a go.
You really can't have enough! Every time I accidentally pull up a bulb in my friends' garden I plant it in mine. Mixed herb salt sounds good; something else to add to my list 🙂
I'm hoping I'll see another one some time; they're so pretty! Actually, at the moment I'm just hoping to get the trap out again soon - there are gusts of 59mph forecast for overnight so I think I'll give it a miss tonight...

If you have the conditions for wild garlic in sure it will get rampant.
The hazelnut project definitely was a combination of a good year for it and spending the previous year trapping squirrels...

Thanks! It's great stuff!

Luckily it seems to quite like the soil in my garden! Hopefully yours will get established and you'll be able to harvest lots 🙂

Not sure I have true wild garlic around here, but we have garlic mustard- I think zi will try making some pesto with that! Thanks for the inspiration!
You're welcome, I'm glad you enjoyed it 🌿
Good choice for moth of the week. On the 8th I had two of these ... never seen it that early before, usually it's May or June before I see one.

Yes, even down here the winds have been the main thing preventing me putting the trap out as often as I usually do.
